“Oh my God, Becky! Look at her butt! It is so big. She looks like one of those rap guys' girlfriends.” -Sir Mix-A-Lot, “Baby Got Back” circa 1992

Hey everybody! Hope all is well. I know some of you may be wondering why I started off with that quote, well let me elaborate. While sitting on a Saturday afternoon sipping a little cognac and coffee, I hadn’t decided what song I wanted to talk about this week. Ironically my IM went off and I got a link from one of my fellow AHH editors. It was a track from The Dream ft/ Lil’ Jon titled “Let Me See That Booty”.  “Let Me See That Booty”? “Oh gosh, what is this going to sound like?” I thought. So I downloaded it…took a listen and hung my head low. Another song about the boo-tay…Great!

As I sighed, I wondered…Will it ever stop? And then I thought back to when I believed the boo-tay became a big focus in Hip-Hop, because the focus on “the ass” has been going on for some time now. 2 Live Crew and Luther Campbell were one of the first groups to put “the ass” up front and on the chopping block in their videos. And while other artists can take credit for highlighting the boo-tay, overall I think the focus became mainstream when Sir Mix-A-Lot did “Baby Got Back”.

You all might have another opinion or a better recollection of when it all hit the fan, but that’s when “I” took notice that the boo-tay became a notable topic of interest every where. Yes, most Black men have always loved a big ass and today women with them are plastered all over various men’s magazines, the internet, and Hip-Hop inspired periodicals like King, The Source and XXL, but at this point I don’t know what to make of it all anymore.

In The-Dream’s song there’s one instance where he says, “Put it on my d*ck then drop it to my shoes and in the end I smell like your perfume.” As if the start of the song and the hook wasn’t enough, The-Dream goes in on this track. This isn’t much different from other lyrics I’ve heard, but The-Dream has written some classic hits, and this one stoops to another level.  Am I surprised? Not hardly, but sometimes it never ceases to amaze me. I just don’t know what else to say. But I have to ask, “Are songs like this merely an artistic expression for the love of the gluteus maximus or just flat out disrespect of women?” This is on the lines of a “Tip Drill” Part 2 and I can only imagine what would happen if this song went to radio and then had a video to follow. This is one of those after Midnight joints and joins the ranks of a long list of strip club anthems that can be attributed to Hip-Hop.

Overall, I am just interested to know what you all think. Are you tired of these types of songs or do you enjoy the artistic expression? Women having large assets isn’t going away anytime soon and neither is the obsession with them, so it is what it is.

Well thanks for taking time out to read what I had to say this week.

Until next time y’all enjoy this week’s Sunday Selection – “Let Me See that Booty”

Are u outraged For real about this song? Or is this outrage just created for an articles sake??? Lots of booty songs, ok but its not anything disgusting about this particular song........ I mean unless ur shocked and disgusted by men being attracted to women's assessts.

U think songs made for specific parts of anatomy are going to stop?? I think if he said all women are sluts or women aint shit, I would be outraged too but he didnt. Its a booty song mad for clubs where women grind they ass on mens dicks. And also strip clubs is still makin money even in a recession. I'm not going to co-sign any fake outrage...

a problem with that song, if there wasn't a video. I mean for real, are you women going to not let Nelly go on that one?
I mean am no Nelly fan. But, damn let son live.

In regards to The Dream song. Creativity is lacking in music anyway. If you heard one booty song, you heard 'em all. I guess strippers got to survive as well.

Goodness...Currently, I don't have a problem with Nelly. And unfortunately, he learned his lesson about degrading women the hard way. I wish some folks people would learn from that example.

If he hadn't done that "Tip Drill" video the women at Spelman would not have protested and he would have the bone marrow drive in ATL for his sister where a potentail bone donor might have been...

I bet he thinks twice about going in with his music today.

Now, not to say that Black men haven't always loved their curvaceous women. Just saying that I think if the booty wasn't always the focus, we'd here more about other features they appreciate as well.

Nelly did take an L for that Tip Drill video, though.

But I like how he started off "EI" w/ "I'm a sucker for cornrows and manicured toes.."

BUT this is about the article. lol. the dream song wasnt too bad, but there is an overabundance of booty anthems out there. it doesnt bother me too much, but the creativity, or lack of, is pretty dissappointing. good article

I must say that u, 2, have a valid point.  I mean, a bone marrow drive is very important, but the issue of the vid was important to those women. When u put it that way, damn, a vid is so minute compared to a woman's life, but those women couldn't have predicted the outcome. And you're right about women being willing participants, us women set the tone for more than we give ourselves credit for. If all women refused to be clad in thongs and pasties (if that), cats would have to find an alternative and switch up they style.

But there's always a sellout somewhere. 80 more women woulda gladly filled their shoes if the women on that video set refused.

Anyway, RIP to Nelly's sister Jackie

Please don't ask Nia B to apologize for her comments about Nelly learning the hard way with the death of his sister.  Its funny because she try's to sound so perfect and good but has the nerve to imply that Cornell's sister deserved to die because the his video.  she sounds like a women scorn, with very low self esteem who looks to find joy in other people pain.  Pretty nasty lady and you cant reason with people like that, sound like one of you brothers done messed up her credit and put a rack of miles on her car.

Nia you need to go out and have a one night stand cause you got alot of built up tension!!!  And don't lie to us and say you got a man cause we aren't buying it.  Come out the bat cave mama.....................

Nia, I can see what your saying.

But lets be honest. This song isnt made for the woman who's 9 to 5 lets her write blogs in her free time at her desk. I don't think this song is meant to be an "artistic expression." It's meant for the club and the women who dance to it.

And from what I see in the clubs the types of women that dance to these songs range from 9 to 5vers to Skrippers. I don't think its anything wrong with what hes saying in the song, cause if you dancing with a girl like that, I'm sure that's what I would like her to do. And it's not disrespect, I'm not in that club looking for a wife, I'm trying to have a good time.

As for Tip Drill and those girls boycotting it. They could have chose a better time for that. Doing that while hes trying to save lives wasn't a smart move for those young ladies. Why weren't those women mad at the women for doing that video. Why take it out on Nelly? IMHO those women didn't have to do that, she aint have to let him slide that card thru her ass like that. Why do every rapper or video vixen have to be a role model? I digress.

On another note, why aren't you talking about those Woman Scorned songs. My example is Jazmin Sullivan. Do you think its cool for her to sing about bussing her bfs car windows cause he cheated? Look at the message there. Shes got women happy about getting dude back by destroying his property. Instead of breaking up with dude and walking away. Isn't that messed up? Lets talk about that.

But my point is this, yes it was harsh that the ladies at Spelman would go to such measures, but at the same time...if Nelly didn't do the Tip Drill video they wouldn't have protested. And I'm sure if he could do it all over again, he might have decided not to do the video.

Now let me say this....I have always and always be a fan and admirer of a Black Woman's rear end...It's a beautiful thing........

But to the fellas.......where do we draw the line? At what point do we acknowledge that black women feel offended by the way we talk, rap about them? At what point do we as men say to ourselves that the black woman is special and deserves to be heard. On the real would you play these songs around your mothers aunt's and grandmothers? I'm such a fan of black women it's just incredible, However I don't feel I ever need to address them in such fashions. I truly let my swag and personality do the job. I think a man is weak when he thinks disrespecting a woman is hot, fly, cool or ok. Sure some women ACT like bitches and such, but I don't think publicly displaying that in videos gives the black woman a good look. When the world looks at black women in general.....they only reference what is seen on television...hoes...ass titties etc. Frankly it's disgusting and real wack....it's a way to be sexy without being disrespectful. To sum it up many men don't have any idea how to scoop a woman, say the right things or flat out just be a charming individual.....you never seen Billy Dee on some bitch bitch hoe typa flow. Get some confidence and some swag fellas.....it's not cool making a woman feel worthless and make them feel that their bodies is the only thing worth something. Sit down with a real black woman one day...you may be intrigued by just her smile or voice.......trust me if ya swag is right...you'll see what i see...

I enjoyed reading your article and I agree with you on the greater majority of what your saying. I think one biggest problems with music is the circle of supply and demand. Women control alot of what these artists do good or bad when it comes to r&b. If women don't support it it usually doesn't get far. Men usually only like r&b records that women like. If ladies don't dance to it in the club or sing along to it everytime it comes on dudes are gonna bypass it (usually). I think we have to do better overall. I truly believe artist wanna make better music but the idustry is caught up in numbers and when the numbers reflect that lower standards create higher revenue than that's what there gonna put out. Women deserve better treatment in our culture but we as a culture men and women have to demand more. If we support better music the industry will support better music. They don't care what they put out only what will sell so there's an opportunity there for us.

One thing I do take issue with though is how you implied maybe or maybe not purposely that the bone marrow drive being cxld was maybe some form of fair retribution from Nelly's video. I doubt you meant that in a mean spirit but having family that's passed from similar illnesses I could see how some might be offended. The biggest issue I've always had with the Spellman protest was timing. Protest his concert, protest his next club date show up at the label or the radio or one of the outlets that promoting or outputing that music. Don't disrupt something that could save lives. That would have been like showing up at his sisters funeral with signs to me.. Nelly was wrong and that's definite but ultimately women were punished equally if not worse by not possibly finding a bone marrow match than being consenting adults in a low class video.

All in all though your article was well articulated and timely. Hopefully we'll stop just talking about how tired we are of our generations lack of a substanant musical legacy and do something about it.  Keep doing ya thing Nia much love!!! Sorry if this was too long AHH!!! I don't usually comment

*BEAR HUGS NIA B*  Looks like u needed that lol..

Since u want my two cents on it, I'll let u know that we (as artists) don't mean it in a disrespectful manner unless we're talking directly to women that have no respect for themselves (bitches) and that word will be used accordingly.  So even if an artist is calling women out of their name I wouldn't take offense to it 'cause they're not talkin' about good women such as yourself.  If there's something in particular about a guy's song rubbing you the wrong way then take the time out to consider that there are more dishonest and easy women out here that have no self respect than there are good ladies, so disrespectful things will always be said, they're just not directed towards you.

But lastly Nia...we're in a recession, my entire family is financially fucked, there are much more serious things to be concerned about than women willfully exploiting themselves..that's their choice, not yours.

B Eazy.
