ALBUM REVIEW: Beyoncé - I Am...Sasha Fierce

It’s hard to tell exactly what Beyoncé Knowles is trying to prove anymore. The hardest-working woman in music is in no danger of going anywhere, and there’s an aura of glamour surrounding her that can only be described as “star power.” Still, despite the series of hits she’s put on the charts, her full catalogue of music is the least appealing thing about her.

On I Am… Sasha Fierce [Music World/Columbia], Beyoncé has chosen to try the “split personality” gimmick (which has never worked for anyone) and her rigid adherence to the flawed concept was not a good start. Sequencing the album with the ballads up front and the dance tracks at the end was the first mistake; filling the album with songs that aren’t very good was the second.

The best of the slower material, “Halo,” would’ve had a lot more impact as a powerful closer and “Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)” could’ve acted as a fun jumping-off point. Instead, neither track comes along at its natural time, making it that much easier to just skip past the less interesting material. The borderline-ridiculous “Ave Maria” is sure to be a frequent casualty.

Some will find “If I Were A Boy” cute for a few weeks, but the melodramatic victim mentality kills any longevity. On past girl-power anthems like “Irreplaceable” or “Bills, Bills, Bills,” Bonnie took charge and bent disobedient men to her will. The woman on “If I Were a Boy” would rather just cry and imagine being empowered; where’s the fun in that?

When Bey’s sassy evil-twin, Sasha Fierce, steps in to represent the independent woman we all know and love, things are only marginally better. “Diva” finds Beyoncé really acting like a boy (a thug at that) and, like most of the other dance songs, it’s something decent to bounce to at least. While the second half of the disc isn’t amazing either, it’s that much harder to care about a drab affair like “Disappear” with images of Beyoncé hot-stepping around your brain in a onesie and a gauntlet.

Admittedly, it isn’t going to matter much what the album sounds like since it’s really just another commercial for the Beyoncé brand anyway. The worst of it will get scrapped when it’s time to plan her next set-list, so as long as she doesn’t forget that “Single Ladies” routine, then we’ll forget most of I Am… Sasha Fierce. Deal?

Single Ladies - Beyonce

*Note: We did check out the deluxe edition but the few extra songs don’t help anything. If they were any good to being with, they wouldn’t be Bonus Tracks.

lol....when the page first loaded, i only saw half a star. was about to go ballistic.

I completely disagree, however. I thought Bey stepped up on this album. She finally sounded like a grown woman that actually had some form of a personality. Tracks like "Radio," I felt, demontrated some versatility. There were too many slow songs, tho. And all bunched together as well. Overall, I'd give this album an easy 8 out of 10. I'm copping.

your hating hard huh? (so they say) anyway, it dont matter if it's TRASH. We all are going to be forced to listen to it. If it flops. She will make sure it's re-released. and payola will get it played on the radio enough until  everyone is brainwashed.....I mean every artist have a flop cd or garbage cd, but when it comes down to beyonce, she wont take that as a lost, and just try better next time. She's going to make sure this album is talked about..Sit back and watch...Ppl may critic it now, but in a couple of weeks after the brainwashing and payola, ppl will be saying it's the hottest cd of the year...

Yeah I don't know what happen to beyonce ass but it's gone. I love that song single ladies, it's tight, I tried to resist it like I tried to resist Rihanna, but she's way too hot. Oh yeah, this is about b-day, yeah of course this album is going to suck, everyone deserve one sucky album. So this is her album to herself which is sucky, she can afford to take a lost next year she plans on locking down the scene with her acting. Did you see her and justin on snl it was great. I am not a beyonce fan like that nor will I ever be. I like some of her music though, I think she can sing when she wants to. But her Dancing is sucky, her attitude is fake and she needs to live a little out of her realm. She would come up with some tight shit then. Okay this is my Change. Keep pushing...

And whoever said Beyonce aint got a phat ass..I in total agreement. She pretty as hell but I have seen finer females in the threads..real talk.

I stopped liking Beyonce after the whole Destiny's Child thing. Now I won't deny that she can sing but she's not original at all and really Jay made her who she is. I mean she copies, not samples, but copies from other people. Of course people will buy her albums until the end of time. I personally think she's overrated. She can't dance...I mean anybody can shake their ass all day and swing their wigs around on stage but that's all. As far as her acting goes...sit down Bey cause you're horrible at that. Sorry to all Beyonce fans but the chick is fake and unoriginal.

ANd she's tryna do everything cause Rihanna sold more albums than B-Day and J Hud is gaining more and more fans. Can Bey just try being a lil humble? It's ok for other people to get some shine too.

Like I said. I rather for this album to do numbers because if it's a flop, then the whole world will be punished with beyonce mania. When she flops or rejected in some sort, she go bizerk. She'll do 2 world wide tours, jump out of a space ship, roll around 80 times on the stage, and shake until she look possessed...I don't feel like watching another round of this...So go buy the cd. so we all wont be punished.

WHO IS THE SCHMUCK GIVING THIS REVIEW?
YOU CLEARLY MISSED THE MARK BECAUSE EVERYONE'S LOVING SASHA RIGHT NOW.

Beyonce didn't change - she added to her style.  Sasha still gives you the same formula she's worked with while I Am gives you HER VOICE - AND IT'S AMAZING.  You can't jump around at 60 or do Bootylicious in Vegas.  She's working on her future and needed more ballads and slow tempo records.

AND SHE KILLED IT!!!!

people are asking why she strayed away from the black sound. Well beyonce is just competition. She's just going to do better than the last hot thing. Thats her technique. When she first hit the scene solo around 02-03, Ashanti was the hottest thing. Ashanti was hood/pop, so beyonce first solo album, followed in the likes of her current competition, so she had that hood swang, round the way type of approach. During the years, rihanna got hot, so thats her new competition, now she make her albums in the likes of her new competion.

This is one reason why I'm not down with beyonce mania. She's talented, pretty, successful, but she's too damn competitive, that it's sickning. She wont let anyone have their time or shine without her trying to block it, but making all eyes watch "beyonce". Its like she study everyonelse technique and mimick it.

Its like the spotlight can't be shared when beyonce is in it. So it forces us to only hear her. There are other artist, the public want to hear also, she block the shine of other artist. its not like I'll do mine and let you do you. When beyonce is in the scene the media try to brainwash us, to listen to nothing but beyonce..this trick is getting old.

& yes I like responding about beyonce even tho I don't care for her music, because I like to voice my mind. I really dislike overly competitive people....

She is the most popular and glam R&B singer but Alicia Keys has outdone her each time if you compare their 3 solo efforts.

Dangerously in Love vs. Songs In A Minor

Bday vs Diary of Alicia Keys

Sasha Fierce  vs. As I AM

Alicia actually comes out on top all though she doesn't wear the crown she is the real champ. Sasha Fierce is ok just like Kanye's  new effort I'm waiting on there next albums

With every Beyonce CD it takes a minute to grow on you because she comes differently everytime. After listening to the CD multiple times I really like. Ive never been a fan of a split personality/two sided CD but the songs are quality. “If I Were A Boy” is set up like her muse Tina Turner's "Private Dancer" if you listen to the set up. Low key verses and high key chorus. I didnt feel it at first but when I really listened to the words its so much deeper than meets the eye. I like all the songs but the dopest, best song of the fucking YEAR is "Im A Diva"! WHOA!! That shit is pure fire and I can see Jay up there ripping the hell out that beat but I hope Bey will not only release that song because its hotter than "Single Ladies", but I hopr she have a remix with allll female emcees.

She's got the game on smash and has went to Entertainer status. You're other fav r&b chicks are just singers.

I'm a nigga who is totally against any kinda male bash/ women empowerment, you go girl bullshit. That being said I can't front on that If I were a boy and Single ladies.

Now the fans are actually brainwashing themselves.....

now that i have listened to the album a couple times there are about 4 songs which I like.  i find that i have to listen to the songs intermittently, esp with the first cd.  i don't know where one song starts and the other ends because they all end up sounding the same with all that slow singing.

i'm disappointed in the sasha fierce side.  when is she gonna grow out of that stupid bubble gum crap? especially with that diva and radio song. omg, unbearable!

I've only went through the album once so far, but it didn't impress me. Double albums always take the risk of having too much fluff (ex: The Blueprint 2 / T.I. vs. T.I.P.).  I'm not a hardcore Beyonce fan but I do like some of her music & this one was disappointing on the 1st listen.

I am surprised she didn't have Jay on a single track or any guest for that matter.

This woman cannot make a good album.  The reviewer summed up Beyonce's solo career perfectly.  She tries to be everything to everyone and her music suffers for it.  I don't think she'll ever reach her musical potential.  She doesn't have ONE album you can point to and say that's "great."

The last Destiny Child album was dope.  Really the only thing I can mess with from the entire DC legacy.  Solange did her thing though.

Okay here's my honest opinion. I was on the board with a few ladies and agreed that it was garbage. I had the time to sit this wknd and listen again and I'll admit it's grown on me. Now i read somewhere on here where it was said that means I forced myself to like it. NOT TRUE.

For one, if you all remember, this same thing happened to Mary when she came out with a different sound for a bit and the whole world went crazy saying she flopped because she wasn't singing sad, hurt songs anymore.

If you really listen to this album you see B is seriously in love and just happy with who she is in life. Yes she's competitive, so what? Life is a competition. Secondly, if she's overloading us with her, the other artists need to come out and just go for there's also. I dont' understand why Ciara, Keri Hilson and others pushed their album back because she was releasing hers.

I am disappointed she didn't wait a few more months so that the others and her sister Solange could get their radio play and promote their albums. But again this is where the competition comes in. The other labels should also promote their artist just as hard. Stop being cheap.

Back in the day their were many coming out @ the same time and they all sold and made their numbers. Why because theirs alot of people out here who don't like B, or vice versa. I'd personally buy all the ladies releases.

I'll put it like this, she wanted to try something different from what she normally does, she did. It worked to me. And all this talk about originality, COME ON, everyone is influenced by some other. It's a part of life, it's recycled over and over again. It's all on how you put it out.

Period, i liked it after playing it again. I love Diva, Hello, and Ego is my ish. the ballads are cool. I like the dance songs better but in general the album is cool to rock to.

Check it out for yourself and see. Listen to a friends because we all know someone who has it. :-) I give it a 7-10 based on how often i'd play it.

one.
